The Public Relations Officer of the Gbewaa Palace, Musah Yakubu, has called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to recruit players from the University for Development Studies (UDS) men’s football team into the national setup, following their historic victory at the 2025 FISU World University Football Cup in China.
UDS made history after defeating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2–1 in extra time, becoming the first African university to win the prestigious tournament. The Ghanaian side impressed throughout the campaign, showcasing grit, resilience, and quality on the global stage.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, September 28, Mr Yakubu congratulated the team on behalf of the Gbewaa Palace, stating that the Dagbon kingdom was proud of their achievement.
He added that selecting UDS players for the Black Stars or other national teams would help boost sports development in the country.
“We shall give them a rousing welcome; the king is proud of them and Ghana as well. This tournament has showcased the talents that our guys have in terms of sports. I think that the Sports Ministry will take advantage of doing some scouting.
“I believe that at the end of the day, some of our players will be picked to join the national team and that will help to transform our Sports Ministry or sports arena to boost sporting activities within the country. And so, we’re very proud and hoping to see these guys at the national stage going into the future, Insha Allah,” he stressed.
Mr Yakubu also conveyed the pride and support of the King of Dagbon, Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II, to the UDS community.
“His Royal Majesty is behind UDS. He will continue to support them financially, psychologically, and morally to ensure that the University is transformed for the better in Ghana,” he said.
