The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to respects its own laws governing its work.
The PPP’s call follows the worrying developments which have characterized the post December 7 parliamentary election results.
In a statement issued by the PPP and signed by the party’s National Chairman, Nana Ofori-Owusu to the media said, “we take notice of the independence of the Electoral Commission but also wish to remind the Electoral Commission that it has to respect its own structures and the laws that it operates with”.
The statement added: “We are aware that in some constituencies, there were no declarations at all. We urge the police to back the Electoral Commission to complete the process in those constituencies and do the necessary declaration in those constituencies”.
However, in the other constituencies where declarations had been done already, the PPP in the statement found it very troublesome and worrying that the EC was seeking to do a re-collation to do a fresh declaration.
“We have perused the C.I. 127 which contains all the detailed rules for this 2024 elections. No where in the C.I 127 is the word “re-collation” mentioned, neither is there any provision giving he Electoral Commission the power to do what it is seeking to do after the designated returning officers have declared elections in those constituencies”, it intimated.
The statement further noted that the laws of Ghana were very clear on what a dissatisfied candidate should do if he/she disagrees with a declared election results.
“The pathway is for that person to go to the high court for a redress”, it said.
To this end ,the PPP’s national chairman further called upon EC to desist from meddling in the affairs of already declared constituency elections and allow the aggrieved candidates to seek their own redress in the law courts.
