MTN Ghana confirms 5,700 customers affected by data breach

The MTN Group has revealed that approximately 5,700 MTN Ghana customers may have been impacted by a recent security breach.

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has initiated an investigation into a potential cybersecurity incident, following the unauthorised access of personal information belonging to certain MTN Ghana customers.

MTN Group reassured the public that it was  collaborating with top cybersecurity experts and conducting a forensic investigation in accordance with established security protocols to evaluate the extent of the breach.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 28, MTN Group confirmed that all affected customers would be contacted directly.

The company also stated that the investigation was  ongoing, and it was  committing the necessary resources to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible.

“MTN assures its customers that the privacy of information is our top priority, and we remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and the trust placed in us by our customers and other stakeholders. We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully,” the statement read.

MTN Group further urged its customers to remain vigilant and adhere to standard security precautions, including the following recommendations:

“To mitigate any fraudulent consequences, a fraud alert can be placed on an individual’s credit report at any of the major credit bureaus.

Keep MTN, MoMo, and banking apps and devices updated.

Use strong, unique passwords for accounts and change them regularly.

Be cautious of unexpected messages and do not click on suspicious links.

Do not disclose information such as passwords, PINs, and OTP when asked to do so by phone, text message, or email.”
