The president of Groupe Nduom Ghana, Dr Nana Kweku Nduom has called on Ghanaians to support the ongoing Made in Ghana campaign being championed by the Government of Ghana.
According to the young entrepreneur, Made in Ghana promotion is very central to changing the structure of the country’s economy from an import to export-oriented economy.
He noted that, rice and sugar imports constituted a significant share of cargo to Ghana.“Our import bill for rice alone is in excess of USD 600m”, he said.
He pointed out that, such imports impact hugely on Ghana’s macro-economic stability, job creation prospects, port logistics management and local capacity development.
The Groupe Nduom Ghana president made these observations while speaking at the launch of Made In Ghana Expo Canada in Accra on Friday June 28, 2024.
Speaking on the theme; “Repositioning Made In Ghana Products and Services to Attract Foreign Investments”, Dr Nana Kweku Nduom, said, his outfit was interested in the measures government was putting in place to mitigate the impact of such influx of imports on local businesses, while still promoting international trade.
He recounted the impact of overdependence on imports during the Covid period where many foreign supply chains were disrupted.
According to him, many importers continued to bear the brunt of high freight costs, and the effect of a weak currency. This, he said, fed into the high rate of inflation Ghana experienced recently.
Dr Kweku Nduom said, Groupe Nduom’s belief in made in Ghana products started in the 90s when his father, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom who is the Global Chairman of the Groupe hired local talent to grow his business when he returned from the United States of America Ghana to establish Deloitte and Touche Consulting .
Within the hospitality sector, he said, the Groupe Nduom hotel chain, Coconut Grove “is noted for serving local dishes across all our facilities in Ghana”.
He added: “We serve our cherished customers locally made fruit juices, locally raised chicken and locally grown rice. Our hotel in Accra and our office structures around the country are clad with locally made bricks that have become our landmark in the architectural landscape in Ghana”.
To this end, he said Groupe Nduom was excited about prospects of promoting local products and services in Canada and beyond .
