Story: Hamza MUMUNI

The Yankazia community in the East Mamprusi District of the North East Region had a rare spectre of Elephants visit last Wednesday; August 25th 2021; but what should have a special tourist attraction rather turned sour.

Three elephants attacked some residents of the community and in the process killed one person. The body of the deceased farmer according to eye witness report, was completely mutilated.

All three elephants stumped on the deceased at will and in other instances, moved with the body around the area of the scene. It was not until the charred body was beyond identification that the mammals left.

However, residents claim the elephants killed three persons as they moved haplessly in other communities, near Yankazia. The youth of the communities also mobilized and attached the mammals; and that resulted in the death of the Elephants. The two others were reportedly, seriously injured.

After the Yankaza dastardly act, the animals marched on, as if being directed to invade Soanvussi, Nasuan and Tuna, three other communities in the East Mamprusi District.

According to a report filed by the National Disaster Management Organisation, the elephants were crossing the major street at Yankazia, when two persons on a motorbike run into them.

Although all two fell off the motorbike, one of the them, in this case the farmer, could not stand up early enough, resulting in an immediate attack from the elephants which led to his instant death.

His colleague rider, however, managed to escape the wrath of the marauding mammals. The body of the deceased, who inhabitants say, has three wives, 13 children made up of eight boys and five girls, had however been conveyed to Gbentiri for burial.

The elephants, which were said to be moving southward to the Karaga District are believed to have returned to the East Mamprusi, their original place abode.

A report of the incident was made to the Gbintiri police by the Assembly member of the Gbintiri Electoral area, and one Beladat Mbiane, and investigation has commenced.

Police personnel from the Gambaga District have been dispatched to Gbintiri to investigate the case, and they are currently making arrangements to convey a medical officer from the Baptist Medical center in Nalerigu to the scene to assist police investigation.

NADMO in the North East Region said its officers are currently at Yankazia and moving towards the Yunyoo Nasuan district, where the elephants reportedly came from. The organisation noted that several people were seen following the three elephants.

This is not the first time elephants have attacked some residents up north. In May, an elephant was killed at Yama near Wungu in the West Mamprusi Municipality, with its ivory stolen.
