Akosombo fire: Four generation units working now – Energy Ministry

Story: News Desk

The government has disclosed that the fourth power generation unit at the Akosombo Dam has been successfully brought into operation, marking a significant step in efforts to stabilize Ghana’s power supply following recent disruptions.

The development was announced in a Facebook post by Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor.

The restoration of the fourth unit came hours after the successful return of the third unit.

This reflects accelerated progress in rebuilding generation capacity lost after a fire incident at the Akosombo substation.

“At 9:09pm, the fourth unit at Akosombo Dam was successfully brought into operation, an encouraging step that strengthens power generation and reflects the dedication and expertise of the team behind the effort,” Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor wrote in a Facebook post on April 28.

The fire incident affected the control room and led to the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid, triggering supply instability and intermittent outages.

The phased restoration of the units is expected to improve generation output and enhance reliability within the power system, as engineers work to fully recover operations at the facility, which remains a critical pillar of Ghana’s electricity supply mix.

Technical teams have been working continuously under demanding conditions to restore the damaged infrastructure and bring additional units back online.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a resilient and stable power system, while supporting engineers and technicians leading the recovery efforts.

The latest progress signals a gradual easing of supply constraints, with authorities maintaining that all necessary measures are being pursued to restore stable electricity supply to households and businesses as quickly as possible.
