TEWU joins FUSSAG, UG Senior Staff in indefinite strike

Story: News Desk

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has declared a nationwide strike starting Friday, September 20, 2024.

The Union joins the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana in the industrial action.

This decision follows the government’s failure to address their demands for improved working conditions, despite prior protests and negotiations.

TEWU, in a statement further indicated “the non-implementation on the part of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to implement the negotiated and approved Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus allowances to our rank and file even though an approval letter for implementation of such was issued by the Ministry of Finance to CAGD on 2nd August, 2024.”

The press release also touched on, “the unfulfilled promise by government to recalculate and pay members Tier Two interest that has accrued from the delayed payment of the Tier Two deductions to our Scheme from January 2010 to 2016.”

They also blamed the government’s failure to “regularly remit our Tier Two deductions to our Scheme for our Fund Managers to effectively manage and guarantee enhanced pensions.”

“Currently, the government is owing our Tier Two deductions from January 2024 to date (8 months) even though, such deductions were made from our hard-earned salaries”, the statement said.
