The Ghana Health Service (GHS), through the Ministry of Health, has issued a public health alert confirming a significant increase in seasonal influenza cases across the country, urging citizens to strictly adhere to hygiene and prevention protocols.
An official notice, dated October 18, 2025, confirmed that Greater Accra, Central, Bono, and Eastern Regions have recorded Influenza A strains H3N2 and H1N1, both of which are common seasonal flu variants.
The spike, according to GHS, coincides with Ghana’s annual flu season, which peaks during the cooler months.”
The statement also highlighted that the flu spreads mainly through respiratory droplets from an infected person, such as through coughing, sneezing, or talking, or by touching contaminated surfaces.
The GHS also noted that schools and dormitories, transport hubs, markets and other crowded public places as environments where the risk of rapid spread is particularly high
Sudden onset of fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue have also been identified as the symptoms of this seasonal flu
8The release also identified children and adolescents (especially with schools in session), the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease as more vulnerable to the infection
To curb the spread and protect communities, the GHS is mandating the following prevention measures for the public:
1. Seek Medical Care Early
2. Self-Isolate
3. Practice Good Hygiene:
4. Avoid Contact
5. Wear a Facemask
Furthermore, the GHS has directed all schools, authorities, and parents, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), to strictly observe these flu prevention measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The GHS assured Ghanaians that the health system has strengthened its response through enhanced surveillance, rapid diagnostic testing, updated case management protocols for clinicians, and public education campaigns via media and community channels.
The release also indicated that all necessary resources were being deployed to contain these high flu cases, and had required the vital cooperation of all stakeholders to protect individual, family, and community health.
