Junior doctors suspend nationwide strike after gov’t’s intervention

Story: News Desk

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced the suspension of its planned nationwide withdrawal of services, following renewed engagements with the Ministry of Health and key stakeholders.

The association’s planned protest was against months of salary delays, stalled postings, and what it described as persistent unfair treatment of its members.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Louisa Afia Nkrumah, and General Secretary, Dr. Rhoda Wun-nam Amadu, on October 2, 2025, the Association said more than 200 junior doctors had worked for between 10 and 14 months without pay.

But in a press release dated Monday, October 6, 2025,  the Association said the decision to hold off on industrial action was taken “as a gesture of goodwill and in the interest of uninterrupted healthcare delivery.”

The JDA-GH cited assurances from the government regarding unresolved concerns related to the welfare and working conditions of junior doctors. Although the specific issues were not detailed in the statement, the Association emphasised that the suspension was temporary and conditional.

“The suspension allows government the opportunity to implement its commitments,” the statement read. “The association will closely monitor progress on these matters. Should there be delays or failure to honour the agreed timelines, the JDA-GH will have no option but to reinstate industrial action without notice”, the statement said.

Signed by the President, Dr. Louisa Afia Nkrumah, and General Secretary, Dr. Rhoda Wun-nam Amadu, the statement reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to the health of Ghanaians but stressed that the dignity and welfare of junior doctors could not be compromised.

The leadership also expressed appreciation to the public, media, and relevant stakeholders for their continued support during the negotiations.
