CAF scraps four-year AFCON plan, returns to to-year cycle

Story: News Desk

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee (EXCO) has unanimously decided to restore the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to its traditional two-year cycle.

The decision reverses a previous arrangement adopted by the continental football governing body last year, which sought to move the competition from a biennial tournament to one held every four years.

CAF announced the latest decision on Friday, October 30, 2027 following a meeting of its Executive Committee.

The development means the AFCON will once again be staged every two years, bringing an end to the proposed four-year cycle.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe had earlier indicated that the governing body would reconsider its decision to extend the tournament cycle.

Speaking at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cabo Verde, held from October 7 to 9, 2026, Motsepe disclosed that the Executive Committee would reassess the decision taken the previous year.

The latest resolution confirms the return to the biennial format, which has traditionally defined Africa’s premier national team football competition.

The AFCON remains one of the continent’s biggest sporting events, bringing together national teams from across Africa to compete for the continental title
