President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep condolences following the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, calling it “a sad loss to Kenya, Africa and the world.”
In a message posted on his official Facebook page, President Mahama extended his sympathy to President William Samoei Ruto, Mama Idah Odinga, the Odinga family, and the people of Kenya.
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, at the age of 80, while being treated in Kochi, India. Reports suggest he suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead after being rushed to hospital.
Odinga was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics and an enduring advocate for democracy. Though he never won a presidency in his five bids, his influence was instrumental in Kenya’s political reforms, including the adoption of multiparty democracy in 1991 and a new constitution in 2010.
His leadership during the protests following the disputed 2007 elections — a period marked by deadly violence and deep national divisions — remains a pivotal chapter in Kenya’s modern history.
Tributes have flowed in from across Africa and the world as leaders reflect on Odinga’s legacy and impact.
