Volta markets queen-mothers and leaders have lauded the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kpando Constituency in the Volta Region, Mrs. Della Sowah, for her effort to bring market leaders together in the region.
They lauded the move by Mrs. Sowah ,who doubles Deputy Minister for Gender ,Children and Social Protection to unify them to promote their cause ahead of the December 7 polls.
Their commendation followed renewed initiative by Mrs. Sowah to bring together market leaders in the region for the first time in three decades to celebrate the contribution of traders to national development.
Mrs. Sowah had earlier educated them on the need to have one voice in the region, and tasked the market leader in Kpando, to liaise with Ho, Hohoe and Aflao to form a regional association.
The leaders although supported the move, however, during President Mahama’s visit to Ho earlier in the year, the Ho market leader, Mama Dagbe Mansa led a group of market women from the capital to protest against it.
She accused Mrs. Sowah of taking away her position as regional market queen as well as given her position to the Kpando market queen, Mama Sena Howusu.
She further accused the MP of printing a cloth for a celebration in Kpando which had Volta logo as part of the cloth design.
Her contention was that, there was already an association , and Mrs. Sowah was dividing their front.
However, at a meeting organised in conjunction with the Volta Regional Coordinating Congress (VRCC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regional leadership in Ho last Thursday, it emerged that there was no such association, as Mama Dagbe Mansa had asserted.
The meeting brought together 108 market leaders from major markets in the region.
Also in attendance were representatives of Togbe Afede and the Paramount queen mother of the Asogli state, the MP for Ho Central, Hon Benjamin Kpodo and Hon Dzifa Ativor among others.
At the meeting, majority of the market leaders who spoke were full of praises for Mrs. Della Sowah whose initiative they said brought them together for the first time in many years.
The market queen mother of Kpando, Mama Sena Howusu told the gathering that the Deputy Gender Minister had been wrongly accused while her image unjustly tarnished.
She described Mrs. Sowah as a unifier and a peace loving person who preferred to do things privately and did not want to take credit publicly for things she did.
Mama Howusu who was enstooled 11 years ago said, she was not aware of any regional association since her installation.
