No allowance for top doctors
Prof. Frimpong Boateng & Prof. Newman affected
Flawless information available to Today indicates that the Board Chairman of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Prof. Seth Aryettey, has directed the Director of Medical Affairs, Prof. Afua Hesse, to take out three senior officers from the Top-up Allowance list.
The unilateral directive, Today understands, was issued by Prof. Aryettey to save his face and that of the hospital from the recent brouhaha.
The senior officers whose names have been marked to be expunged from the Top-up Allowance list, Today discovered, include Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Prof. Mrs. Mercy Jemima Newman and Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa.
Set up in 2010, the Top-up Allowance is a special fund instituted by the Korle-Bu to make up for differences in allowances paid to consultants of the University of Ghana Medical School.
Plausible sources close to the hospital told Today that Prof. Aryettey is now the one who determines who qualifies for Top-up Allowance or not.
And though his action was to sanitise the Top-up Allowance list, Today gathered that Prof. Aryettey employed that method to exact his pound of flesh from personalities like the former CEO of KBTH, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng and others.
Prof. Aryettey, Today found out, even after age 70, was still enjoying Top-up Allowance. And even though his name was taken from the list during Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s era, the paper can state on authority that he has managed to get his name back unto the list without recourse to laid down rules and regulations covering the allocation of the Top-up Allowance.
The sources disclosed that per the instructions given to Prof. Hesse, she is to make sure the next list of beneficiaries on the Top-up list does not contain names such as Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, Prof. Agyeman Badu-Akosa, Prof. Mrs. Mercy Jemima Newman among others.
Today can also reveal that Prof. Hesse is uncomfortable with the directive as she together with the board chairman could also fall prey to their own actions if they do not tread cautiously.
Subsequently, the sources pointed out that Pro. Hesse is not ready to carry out the said directive to the latter, even though she has agreed to remove the afore-mentioned names from the list.
Checks conducted by Today indicated that the Top-up Allowance list is full of ghost names.
Meanwhile, when Today contacted the Public Relations Officer of KBTH, Mr. Mustapha Salifu, he informed the paper that he will get back to us, but as of press time yesterday the PRO had not called to respond to the story.
