Tension in Krowor Assembly

TENSION is gradually mounting at Krowor Municipal Assembly, one of the newly created assemblies in the Greater Accra Region, following the alleged illegality being perpetuated by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Emmanuel Nortey, Today has gathered.

The illegality is a result of the coordinating director sidelining the Presiding Member and also chairing over an inaugural meeting of the Krowor Assembly, which had already been inaugurated by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama.

But an accession, Mr Emmanuel Nortey has refuted, adding that all what happened was within the ambiance of the law despite criticism adding that the case went to the High Court and the court ruled in their favour hence the organisation of fresh elections.

Speaking in an interview with Today, the former Presiding Member (PM) of the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly, Mr David Annang Laryea, popularly known as Nii Shipie, said after the division of the assembly into Ledzokuku and Krowor Municipal Assemblies, the sector minister on March 15, 2018 inaugurated it and asked everyone to hold on to each position at the new assemblies.

Mr Laryea said because his electoral area falls under Krowor, he automatically became the PM for the new assembly but was shock when a team lead by Mr. Nortey called for fresh election of government appointees and elected a new PM for the municipality defiling the orders of the sector minister earlier.

According to him, what Mr Nortey did was merely an act of self-willed and grossly unconstitutional, adding that the local government minister should immediately order and restrain the coordinating director from perpetuating gross misconduct.

The Krowor Municipal Assembly is still young and has suffered base on the single act of some individuals in the assembly and it is shocking that since the inauguration of the named assembly, not even a single meeting has been convened.

Quoting from the Local Government Act that establishes the assemblies and functions of each member, Mr Laryea said the inaugural meeting was the first meeting of any assembly following every local election to inaugurate members in the assembly.

This kind of meeting is held every four years after an assembly successfully completed its tenure and fresh elections conducted.
