AGGRIEVED youth at Kyempo, a community in the Asante Akim South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, are seething with anger at their Queen mother, Nana Obaa Akyem IlI, and the Unit Committee members in the town for doing what they describe as the ‘unthinkable.’
The anger of the youth, according to them, has been compounded with persistent refusal of their traditional office holders and authorities of the community to render accounts to the people of the community for the past twenty years.
Speaking with Today in an interview via telephone yesterday, Public Relations Officer (PRO,) of the youth group called Freedom Fighters Association, Mr Kwadwo Owusu Gyamfi, on behalf of the youth gave an ultimatum to the queen and authorities to render account to the people in the community before the end of 2018 or else they will incur their wrath.
He charged the queen and authorities to explain in detail to the community why they still have challenges in development despite contributions; else they would exempt themselves from any community duties and assignments
He hinted that aside from the unit committee duties in the community, various committees were also established for about twenty years ago, in the collection of funds towards community development but no account has been rendered since then.
“The committees include funeral committee which is expected to collect 50 pesewas during every funeral, cocoa committee to take care of one kilo of cocoa being deducted from all cocoa farmers during selling, and finally water and sanitation committee who manage the income of the public water and culprits of sanitation offenders respectively,” he said.
The statement further revealed that damaged boreholes in the community remained unrepaired due to lack of money.
According to the statement, the cocoa committee operated for five years before the demise of their Paramount Chief, Nana Kwadwo Owusu, and yet they don’t know where the money was kept.
That situation, he stressed, has been retarding development in the area.
“No proper roads, we are totally out of development,” he said.
But in an interview with the Queen mother of Kyempo, Nana Obeaa Akyem III, to get her side of the matter, she called on the youth to exercise restraint and assured them that they would render accounts for all the financial transactions of the community on Friday, November 2, 2018, for peace to prevail in the area.
