Personnel of the Operation Vanguard have apprehended some (fifty) 50 suspected illegal miners in the Western and Eastern Regions in various operations conducted over the past week.
The task-force in the Western Region apprehended 16 suspected Chinese illegal miners in the general area of Enchi Kwahu in the Aowin District together with five (5) excavators they have been using to aid their operations.
The thirty-four (34) other suspected illegal miners were also arrested in the East Akim municipality in the Eastern Region. The suspects, who were made up of both locals and foreign nationals were apprehended in the general area of Asiakwa.
This was disclosed by the PRO of the Task-force, Captain Andy Sowatey, in an interview with Today in Takoradi.
He said that nine (9) of the suspects who were locals have been handed over to civil police at Kibi for prosecution while the others comprising of 16 Chinese, 22 Guinean and 3 Burkinabe nationals and the 5 excavators have been handed over to the IMCIM for further action.
He further hinted that the task force through its Forward Operating Base (FOB) operations conducted in the Central Region has impounded and destroyed a total of 94 Changfan branded water pumping machines.
According to him, though the task-force have been receiving assistance through tip-offs from some locals, others have also resorted to providing safe havens for illegal miners.
He lamented that these illegal miners have rented accommodations within various areas where galamsey was rampant and are wreaking havoc on our water bodies and forests.
He, therefore, called on the traditional leaders and the locals to help flash out these unlicensed operators and their collaborators from their hideouts to save our environment from further destruction.
