NPP Central Tongu Parliamentary Race… Businessman Floors DCE

There was jubilation galore in the Central Tongu Constituency of the Volta Region after the Electoral Commission of Ghana declared a Ghanaian celebrated business tycoon, Mr Raymond Korku Escambellar Abledu-Amenu, as the winner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in the area.

Mr Abledu-Amenu, who is the General Manager (GM) for Agapet Limited, floored the Central Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Thomas Moore, with twelve (12) votes to win the Central Tongu Constituency parliamentary slot of the NPP for 2020 general election.

The declaration of the outcome of the of election which was held on Saturday, September 28, 2019, was delayed for three days because the DCE’s team and supporters were aggressive and attacking everybody in the venue of the election at Mafi-Adidome Senior High School.

Following that confusion, the ballot boxes of the results of the election were kept at the Adidome District Police Command, but were later released for declaration on Tuesday October 1, 2019 which eventually went in favour of Mr Abledu-Amenu.

Mr Abledu-Amenu polled a total of 225 votes against his only contender, Mr Thomas Moore, who garnered 213 votes out of 440 total valid votes cast by the delegates.

Speaking in an interview with Weekend Today, Mr Abledu-Amenu commended the delegates for electing him to become the NPP parliamentary candidate for 2020 general election:

He gave the assurance that the 2020 general election shall present the NPP in the constituency with an excellent opportunity to write a new history in the constituency.

He stated that he was ready to snatch the Central Tongu Constituency parliamentary seat from the NDC in the 2020 election for the NPP.

To this end, he called on all the supporters and members of the party to rally their support for him to wrestle the seat from the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze.

He advised the sitting NDC MP to start making preparations to exit Parliament in 2020.

He stressed that: “The real contest is against NDC MP and not this one. This primary was no contest; the NDC MP’s contest is the bigger task and should be the focus.”

Mr Abledu-Amenu further stated that: “If it is God’s will, the NPP will take the Central Tongu parliamentary seat in the 2020 poll.

He further called for unity among the NPP and stressed the need for members and supporters of the NPP to turn their efforts towards winning the parliamentary polls scheduled to take place next year.

We thanked God for a successful election. It is not a win for Mr Abledu-Amenu but a win for Central Tongu. My appeal to the DCE’s supporters is that we are all one,” he noted.
