NDC Calls For Interim Electoral Management Committee To Run 2020 Elections

National Communication Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Sammy Gyamfi has called for the setting up of an Interim Electoral Management Committee to run the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections slated to take place on 7th December, 2020.

According to him the current commissioners at Ghana’s electoral management body, Electoral Commission (EC) cannot be trusted to run a free, fair and credible elections.

Speaking on Adom 106.3 FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem hosted by one Chief Jerry Forson popularly called CJ, the NDC National Communication Officer explained that the deeds, actions and utterances exhibited by the EC Commissioners notably the Chairperson Madam Jean Mensah and her second in command, Dr. Bossman Asare from the very day they took office shows that they do not have the professional acumen, technical knowhow, and the competence require of commissioners to run elections and its related issues.

“The Jean Mensah led commissioners are confused. CJ, everything happening at the Commission now point to the fact that the managers of the electoral management systems do not know their left from right when it comes to running elections.” He told the host.

Mr. Gyamfi further stated that the NDC is of the firm believed that the proposed date set by the commission for the start of new voter’s registration will not see the light of day. His reason was that the Constitution Instrument (CI) which is to serve as a guide for the electoral processes is currently laid before Parliament and with the COVID-19 scare in the House, nobody knows if members of the house will be able to sit for the mandatory 21 days for it to be mature.

Aside the CI, the machines and equipment for the exercise are yet to be imported. We heard the manufacturing company is having some difficulty in meeting the deadline but we will come to that later.

“Today is May 28, 2020 and the EC says it will start its registration exercise in last week of June, 2020. You see they are not even clear on the date. What these commissioners are doing at the EC is guess work which does not help anybody’s course.” He maintained.

As we speak the Jean Mensah led commission has no authentic timetable to enable the EC itself, political parties, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other development partners to work with six month into general elections. What kind of commissioners are these? The NDC National Communication Officer enquired.

“This Madam Jean Mensah led commission is not fit to run our elections and for this reason we should all come together as a country  to set-up an Interim Electoral Management Committee to run the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections” Mr. Gyamfi reiterated.
