Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has charged the newly inaugurated Governing Councils (GCs) of the University of Winneba (UEW) and University of Development Studies (UDS) to ensure effective financial management.
This, he said, following the inauguration of the Governing Councils of the two public universities in Accra on September 5, 2019, at a brief ceremony which was necessitated by the expiration of the tenure of the previous GCs.
Addressing the gathering, the minister disclosed that the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has taken note of the integrity and sense of duty coupled with the myriad experiences hoped to be brought to bear in the discharge of the responsibility entrusted to them.
Reiterating the duties of the council, Dr Opoku Prempeh, amongst other things, entreated the councils to ensure the establishment and arrangement for the internal organisation of the universities.
He further assured the two councils of government’s commitment to supporting tertiary industry collaborative programmes to increase opportunities for work and study making entrepreneurship a critical component of the school system.
Also, he charged the universities to train students to acquire the necessary professional and academic competencies for teaching in tertiary and pre-tertiary institutions, non-formal education institutions and to build the professional, academic capacities of servicing teachers through regular and distance education.
However, the minister charged the GC of the UEW to work in ensuring that peace returned to the campus to redeem the reputation to foster smooth running of academic programmes and normalcy of campus life at the university.
He further tasked the UEW GC to iron out all outstanding grievances of any aggrieved individual to pave way for the consideration for the date for congregation.
