Majority Caucus donates GHC100, 000.00 to COVID-19 Trust Fund

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ghana’s Parliament led by the Majority Leader, Mr Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has presented a cheque for GHC100, 000.00 as their contribution to the government’s COVID-19 Trust Fund.

The donation is to support government in its effort to mobilize resources to fight to contain and reduce the spread of the Coronavirus disease.

Addressing the Media at a short presentation ceremony held at the plush Job 600 office complex near Parliament House in Accra, the Majority Leader, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that the donation was their “widow’s mite” from their welfare scheme to support the trust fund.

The Majority Leader used the occasion to preached the need for benevolent organisations and well to do individuals to support the government by every means possible to combat Coronavirus pandemic.

“In respect of the COVID-19 Trust Fund, as you are all aware, we finalized the Bill the previous week and the President has assented to it so it’s now an Act and the Trustees have been constituted” Mr Mensah-Bonsu noted.

It would be recalled that Parliament of Ghana on Thursday, April 2, 2020, passed the COVID-19 National Trust Fund Bill, 2020 which was later assented by President Nana Akufo-Addo into an Act.

The rationale behind the establishment of the COVID-19 Trust Fund is to enable government to galvanize support from organizations and individuals both home and abroad to contribute monies into the fund to fight against Coronavirus disease which is spreading like wildfire across the continent.

Besides, the establishment of the fund would also help the government to receive and properly regulate the donations for its intended objectives.
