Any hope for our 2018 World Cup qualification?

THE senior national football team, the Black Stars, last Saturday failed to revive their 2018 Russia World Cup chances after they were held to 1-1 draw by Congo in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.  The Black Stars had their destiny in their own hands, particularly after Uganda beat Egypt 1-0 in Kampala on Thursday, August 31, 2017.

WITH Egypt’s loss to Uganda, the opportunity was beckoning for the Stars to grab all three maximum points by beating Congo to breathe life into their World Cup qualifying mission.  Unfortunately, our lads failed to live up to that expectation, dashing our hopes of qualifying to next year’s World Cup.

THE results of Saturday’s match also mean that Ghana still sits a lowly third ahead of Congo with just two points, which situation makes it extremely difficult for us to make it to our fourth successive appearance at the biggest stage in world football.  This is something Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has himself admitted.

TODAY is disappointed that the Black Stars could not seize the chance that came their way.  And we believe a lot of Ghanaians are equally disillusioned by the Black Stars performance in their match against Congo.  In fact with the array of stars that we paraded on the day, it should not have been difficult for us to win that match.

THE Congo match should have been won by the Black Stars.  And Today cannot fathom what accounted for the rather lethargic display by our boys on the day.

NOW it is increasing becoming clear that Ghana is the whipping boys of Group E, which comprises Uganda, Congo and Egypt.  Significantly, Uganda’s home victory over the Pharaohs of Egypt makes our group very interesting now that they [Uganda] are occupying the summit of the table.

AS things stand now, it is either Uganda or Egypt that can make it to the World Cup next year.  However, in the case of the Black Stars the least our lads can do is to save our sinking image by winning our remaining three matches.

THOUGH down, we urge the technical bench to psyche up the players to go all out and win our remaining matches, as that will bring us some pride.
