A 30-year-old man, who has been identified as a Ghanaian with the name Frederick Amfo, is said to have fled the United States of America (USA) after being accused of rape.
Amfo, who is alleged to be an illegal immigrant working as an Uber driver in the US, was arrested after one of his female passengers reported that he forcefully had sex with her in his car on April 8, 2018.
According to the said victim, Emily Murry, she was trying to get home when Amfo allegedly locked the doors to his vehicle and sexually assaulted her in the backseat.
Information from the police in Weymouth, Massachusetts indicated that DNA collected from a rape kit and Amfo’s car led to his arrest days later.
He was charged with sexual assault and a Quincy District Court set bail at $10,000 after which he was given a stay away order.
According to Fox News, the court records showed that Amfo was also given 24 hours to surrender his passport if he made bail. But he made bail later that afternoon without surrendering his passport.
A disappointed Murray who found out Amfo had fled to Ghana three days later told Boston Herald “If I went to Ghana and I committed a crime, I wouldn’t expect to be able to hop on plane and say sorry about that, here’s some money. I would expect to answer for it. Accountability. And there had been just zero,” she said on Tuesday, April 17, 2018.
She said, “Amfo is a coward who couldn’t stay to prove his innocence as he claimed.”
She added, “he proclaims his innocence and then just leaves? I feel hurt. … People get blamed for not coming forward and then get victimized more when they do.”
