Ghana Premier League: Inter Allies lead the way

Tema based Inter-Allies signalled their readiness to challenge for the title in the much-awaited Ghana Premier League by recording an emphatic 3-0 against Bechem United at the Tema Park.

Dan Amanfo scored the historic first goal of the season before Nigerian International, Victorien Adje Adebayor hit a remarkable brace to give Allies a dream start to the campaign.

The match marked a joyous return to the Ghana Premier League for former Accra Hearts of Oak coach, Kenichi Yatsuhashi, who joined Inter Allies ahead of the season.

After a goalless first half, Allies returned from the break with verve, scoring two goals in seven minutes. Dan Amanfo scored the first goal of the season in the 51st minute before Adebayor scored the first of his two goals to double the lead in the 58th minute.

Adebayor scored his second of the afternoon in the 73rd minute to seal the comfortable win for Inter Allies.

The remaining matches of the opening day fixtures that kicked off on Sunday saw most of the home teams record wins except for West African Football Academy (WAFA) and league debutants, Eleven Wonders who were at home to Accra Hearts of Oak.

Debutants Techiman Eleven Wonders held Accra Hearts of Oak to a 1-1 draw in a dream fixture for the home side while WAFA continued their unbeaten run at the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope against Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Without key players that formed an integral part of their scintillating form at home last season, WAFA got off to a bright start in the 5th minute through a sublime free kick from Aminu Mohammed before striker Yakubu Mohammed equalised in the 19th minute for the Porcupine Warriors.

Veteran Kumasi Asante Kotoko midfielder Jordan Opoku’s shot in the 19th minute was directed in by striker Yahaya Mohammed to pull parity for the Porcupine Warriors.

An inexperienced WAFA will feel unsatisfied after creating several chances but failed to find the back of the net as Kotoko travel to Kumasi with a point. The Reds surprisingly came close to grabbing the opener following a beautiful interplay in the middle but Yakubu Mohammed’s shot was dealt with by WAFA’s goalkeeper.

The Academy boys took charge of the game, like they do most of the times against Kotoko, creating several chances with Richmond Lomotey coming close a couple of times.

Goalkeeper Felix Annan was a barrier for WAFA making sure he does not concede at his former home. However, in the third minute, a free kick from former Black Starlets winger Aminu Mohammed was difficult for him to deal with.

Former Kotoko striker, Alex Asamoah announced his return to the Ghana Premier League by cancelling an early lead by Accra Hearts of Oak through midfielder, Winful Cobbina.

The Phobians, who started the game as the bookmakers favourite, controlled possession nearly and went close to breaking the deadline but Joseph Esso’s weak shot was saved by John Moosi.

And just as Eleven Wonders looked to be coming into the game, Hearts were awarded a penalty in the 8th minute by referee Bernard Dumfe after Joseph Esso was brought down in the penalty box by Kweku Osei.

Mercurial midfielder Winful Cobbina stepped forward to slot home from 12 yards to hand the Phobians the initiative. Eleven Wonders came back from recess determined to draw level as they committed more men upfront in a bid to stifle the Phobians.

The plan worked perfectly as Alex Asamoah poked home from close range in 46th minute to restore parity. The Phobians tried to regain the lead but their incessant attacks did not yield results as the defense of the hosts stood resolute.

In other matches, Dreams FC inflicted a 1-0 defeat against Elmina Sharks at the Dawu Park. Shabani Zuberu shattered the hearts of the visiting fans with a 92nd minute strike to hand Dreams FC their first three points in the return to the elite division.

Ashgold bounced back from plights in last season league by beating Wa All Stars 1-0 at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi while Ebusua Dwarfs got off to a brilliant start at home with a 1-0 win over Berekum Chelsea in Cape Coast.

Medeama SC also picked their first three points of the season by beating league debutants, Karela FC at the T&A Park in Tarkwa.
