Ghana Has 74,000 (KMs) Of Roads to construct—Roads Minister

Minister for roads and highways has revealed that Ghana as a country has seventy-four thousand (74,000) kilometres of roads to be constructed to meet the roads demands of the citizenry currently.

He explained that these were roads including highways and urban roads in the country waiting to be constructed.

All the needed assessments have been done and construction would start soon as the president has given his approval.

According to Kwame Amoako-Atta, Ghana needed these levels of roads to be constructed before it can be described as a country with good roads in the Sub-region.

He said many Ghanaians were yearning for good roods but it was not an easy task for the country to achieve this task.

He claimed that good roads may sound good “but good roads can be deadly, if people are not well educated on how to use them.”

“When the roads are good people turn to overspeed on them, thereby creating additional problems for the country, but when the roads are bad they turn to be a little cautious when driving on them,” he said.

The roads and highways minister made comment when he joined the Minister of Inner-City and Zongo Development and Member of Parliament for Madina,AlhajiAbubakarSaddique Boniface, to assess some bad roads for construction in the La-Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region.

He gave the assurance that President Nana AddoDankwaAkufo-Addo has given a strong indication to have all these seventy-four thousand kilometres of the country’s roads fixed.

And very soon Ghanaians will see the roads being constructed going into the next tenure of the president before the Vice-President, Dr. MahamaduBawumia, takes over from him [PresidentAkufo-Addo], he teased.

He said construction of roads would this year begin in all the Zongo areas across the country, stressing that Madina was a launch pad for the project.

The roads minister moved his team of directors led by Director of Urban Roads, Dr. AbassAwal, to tour the area to assess the levels of bad roads in the area.

The tour took the two ministers to UN area, Washington-SDA roads, Odo Grace Area, Victory Academy road as well as the road in front of the New Patriotic Party’s Member of Parliament for Suhum in the Eastern Region residence in Accra, Redco flats, MadinaZongo among others.

He told a gathering at a durbar after the tour that his ministry had taken a memo to Cabinet to have the road problems in the country solved as the president indicated in his State of Nation Address (SONA) before Parliament recently.

Solving the road problems has become a worry to the president as many drivers are not killing their speed.

Research has shown that ninety-one (91) percent accidents recorded on our roads are man-made that can be avoided, if drivers exercise caution on the roads, he stressed.

For his part, AlhajiAbubakarSaddiqueBomiface said the government of Nana AddoDankwaAkufo-Addowill transform the Zongosto become places of hope and prosperity.

According to him, it is line with this that PresidentAkufo-Addo created the Ministry of Inner-city and Zongo Development and established the Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF) to help transform the inner cities and Zongo communities.

The vision of the ministry, he said, is to have a prosperous, inclusive and sustainably developed Inner-City and zongo communities in the country he posited.

To this end, he disclosed that his ministry has prepared a plan based on four thematic areas to deliver on its mandate namely: infrastructure and sanitation enhancement, social and economic development, crime and security control, heritage and cultural promotion.
