The recent spate of fire outbreaks being recorded in senior high schools (SHSs) in some parts of the country are caused by unscrupulous elements in the opposition parties to thwart the government’s free education implementation, Education Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has stated.
“They were not caused by any electrical fault. I know it is a pure arson by people who don’t want the successful implementation of the free Senior High School Education,” the minister spoke on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM’s morning show during a one-on-one interview.
There have been fire outbreaks in Oppong Memorial Senior High School (SHS) at Kokofu, Accra Academy, Alema Hall, destroying St. Charles Minor Seminary Senior High School in Tamale which destroyed several properties worth millions of Ghana cedis.
“Very soon, the Ghana Education Service will hold a press conference to expose individuals behind these arsons,” Dr Opoku Prempeh hinted.
Meanwhile, the cause of the outbreaks was yet to be known, according to the Ghana National Fire Service, investigations on the causes were still ongoing.
The authorities at Oppong Memoral are appealing to the government for a new structure to house tracks 1 and 2 students in school at the moment to ease congestion.
The Bekwai Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service, Lucy Ama Ankrah, has also appealed to government and NGOs to come to the aid of the affected students.
