Fearsome Sharks beat Hearts to lift Bakatue Festival Cup

Ishmael Hammond’s penalty ensured that the Fearsome Elmina Sharks defeated Hearts of Oak 4-2 on penalties to lift the 2018 Bakatue Festival Cup.

The match needed shoot out to separate both teams after a Benjamin Boateng penalty goal was cancelled out Kojo Obeng Jnr’s 53rd minute strike for the visitors.

The hosts began brightly with good spells of possession while creating decent chances but lack of accurate shooting denied them from going ahead. Hearts grew stronger into the game and created decent through their speed machine, Patrick Razak bit both teams ended the first half goalless.

Sharks however fell behind when Kojo Obeng Jnr slotted past Joseph Essam eight minutes into the second half after he was left unmarked in the penalty.

With the advantage, the Phobians pushed for more to cushion their lead but the agility of Essam and his defensive set-up marshalled by Ishmael Hammond and Ofoe Ofotsu thwarted their efforts.

The hosts then piled relentless pressure on the visitors as the central midfield pair of Benjamin Arthur and Richmond Mpong backed by Edward Ebo Mends pushed the visitors into their half.

This resulted in the creation of many chances but the forward lines of Tanko Mohammed and Benjamin Tweneboah fluffed their lines when they were put through on goal.

The Fearsome Sharks will however get the chance to pull parity when the diminutive Benjamin Tweneboah with his speed and treachery was hacked down in the penalty box in the 70th minute.

Benjamin Boateng stepped up and calmly converted past Ernest Sowah in post to peg back the Phobians.

Sharks piled on more pressure on the Hearts back line but the lack concentration in front of goal and astute defending from the Phobian defence robbed them from taking the lead.

Both teams went straight into penalties after the four minutes of additional time yielded no goal.

Sharks scored first through Benjamin Tweneboah while Camara Nguessan missed for Hearts.

Sharks again converted through Benjamin Boateng but Hearts reduced the deficit when Isaac Mensah scored to make it 2-1.

Sharks scored their third and Hearts also missed through Kojo Obeng Jnr. At this point, it was down to Samuel Arthur to wrap the game up but he saw his kick spectacularly saved by Sowah.

On the other hand William Dankyi scored to make the score 3-2. Sharks however wrapped it up when centre back Ishmael Hammond scored to make it 4-2.
