ASHMA MCE Calls For Support


Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has held its turn of the Meet-the-Press series with a call on residents to support the assembly in its efforts to make Ashaiman a 24-hour city.


The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Albert Boakye Okyere, who addressed the media, touching on security, said in the past Ashaiman had been in the news for bad reasons, but now the general security situation in Ashaiman has greatly improved.


He said the success chalked over the years was as a result of combined efforts of the gallant men and women of the security forces.


Mr Okyere further stated that the assembly supports the police in their day-to-day and night patrols and snap check points within the municipality to prevent the incidence of crime.


He noted that robbery cases in the municipality had dropped from 104 cases in 2016 to 50 in 2018, whilst murder cases has also dropped from 8 in 2016 to 3 as at October 2019.


He also said as part of bringing governance to the doorsteps of the citizenry, the assembly has been organising town hall meetings and community engagements.


The MCE revealed that the assembly had undertaken the construction of a 3-storey administrative block, MCE’s official residence amongst others.


“Ashaiman Municipality being a commercial city in collaboration with the private sector has constructed 500 units of stalls at New Mandela market, 85-unit lockable stores at Valco Flats and the China Mall,” he disclosed.


He also said 157 small and medium scale enterprises have been registered with the registrar general’s department, while 240 people have been supported with skill training in soap making, pomade, confectionery and the likes.



On job creation, Mr Okyere disclosed that under the National Youth Employment, 679 youth were registered between 2017 to date with 428 of them being engaged.


He said 553 have been engaged under NABCo, 226 new jobs created under Local Economic Development, whilst 23 caterers have been engaged in the school feeding programme.



Touching on road, he said the assembly had undertaken rehabilitation works at Middle East area, drainage works at Tulaku, drainage and gravelling works between the assembly and the police station road.


Mr Okyere also mentioned the construction of drainage system at Middle East, culverts and gravelling at Starlight area roads.


He said the assembly supports teacher awards, support science, technology, maths and innovation education and also sponsor maths workshop for JHS 3 students and teachers.


The assembly has completed a 12-unit classroom block at Tsui Bleoo, constructed a modern KG block at community 22 Annnex Basic School, fencing of ASHMA Basic 4 School, completion of a 12-unit classroom block at Presby School (ongoing).


On sanitation, he revealed that sanitation has improved drastically in the municipality, especially under GAMA, where 19 institutional toilets with wash facilities have been constructed and in use


“The assembly in collaboration with Football for Wash programme is implementing SESA recyclable waste project in school,” he emphasised.


He said there has also been social norms campaign in schools, training of artisans on household toilets construction, enforcement of sanitation bylaws and community sensitisation on sanitation.
