A taskforce from the Environmental Health and Sanitation Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the Ashanti Region, has seized expired assorted products in the area.
The products were seized at Airport Roundabout, Santase, Adum, Bekwai Roundabout and Bantama during regular monitoring exercises.
The expired products include biscuits, cigarettes, tomato paste, bottled and canned drinks, among others.
Some of the products had 2017 as expiry dates while others had their dates erased from the containers to deceive buyers.
Alhaji Adam Sumaila, Head of Food Hygiene at the department, told Adehye FM’s Elisha Adarkwah on Thursday, 12 July 2018 that some of the products were on the shelves while others were seized from distribution vehicles.
He said owners of some previously seized products had been processed for court, adding that the individuals behind the current set of seized products will not be spared.
Mr Sumaila added that the taskforce was set up by the Kumasi mayor to monitor the various markets within the metropolis after the Assembly received numerous complaints concerning expired products.
Kumasi mayor Osei Assibey Antwi, expressed worry over the expired products being sold on the market and commended the department for its work.
