Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah , has expressed the city’s appreciation to Bloomberg Philanthropies for their support to implement interventions to reduce road traffic fatalities in Accra under the Initiative for Global Road Safety.
According to him the ongoing road safety enhancement works at the Lapaz intersection would go a long way to help reduce growing rates of traffic-related deaths and injuries in Accra.
The Mayor said this when he addressed some 120 participants at the ongoing partner meeting of the Blommberg Philanthropies in New York in the United States of America.
He said Accra with support from the Bloomberg Philanthropies launched its first-ever road safety report in July highlighting that 90% of deaths are among vulnerable road users – pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists and a major Pedestrian Action Plan which has resulted in the construction of more than 400 meters of pedestrian walkways, as well as the recovery of 20 miles of pedestrian sidewalks (from vehicles and food vendors).

“We have also established the first ever joint police and Metropolitan guard’s taskforce on enforcement
,” he added.
He said data from the Ghana Police Service shows that from 2011 to 2015, 15% of all road fatalities in the Accra Metropolitan Area happened on the N1 corridor stressing that the interventions would go a long way to reduce this high rate of fatalities and serious injuries.
He said the safety interventions to enhance pedestrian safety in the area are increasing the pedestrian signal timing (crossing times) from 18s to 41s to enable more people crossing the entire lanes without waiting in the middle, lowering the kerbs where pedestrians cross the roads to ensure unimpeded and safe pedestrian flow and that of the physically disabled.
Other interventions he said are remarkable were the crossings and other pavement markings including pedestrian crossing, strips, centre line markings etc. to ensure general safety at the intersection, while enabling pedestrians to cross at designated crossing locations, progressively narrowing of lane widths to ensure reduction of speed as Motorists approach the intersection as well as reduce the pedestrian crossing distance.
The Mayor also touched on increasing the median refuge to allow for more pedestrian volumes, better protection and visibility for pedestrians while waiting in the middle of the road for a chance to cross as well as replacing destroyed signals and crash barriers to enhance communication with motorists and reduce the risk of crashes respectively.
He assured that the AMA would continue to work with the National Road Safety Commission, Bloomberg Philanthropies and all partners under this initiative as well the road agencies to deploy proven solutions to save lives and improve environments where people live, work and play.
