Well said, Mr President: We must be ruthless with criminals!

YESTERDAY Ghana’s 5th President under the Fourth Republican Constitution, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, delivered his second State of the Nation Address (SONA). As it has always been the case, the president delivered his address on the floor of the Parliament in the presence of the two hundred and seventy-five (275) Members of MPs who are representatives of Ghanaians in their various constituencies.

CHARACTERISTIC of most SONAs, the president touched on almost every sector of the economy.  However, one critical area that Weekend Today thinks President Akufo-Addo touched on was our security.

ACCORDING to President Akufo-Addo, moving forward our security agencies will be ruthless with those whose motive is to disturb the peace and stability of this country.

“I do not need to repeat that crime wears no political colours and I am certain that message has gone down to all.  The law enforcement agencies will crack down very hard on all those who would disturb the peace of our nation,” President Akufo-Addo warned yesterday.

IN fact, this is the path we on this paper have been advocating for, especially when criminals in this country are becoming more and more ruthless and, in most cases, killing their victims.  In the wake of these hardened criminals, the only message to them from our security agencies is to be ruthless with therm.

THEREFORE, it is our expectation that our security agencies will be goaded on by what President Akufo-Addo has charged them to do, so far as criminals in this country are concerned.  It is something that must be taken seriously by all our security agencies.

THIS is because if criminals continue to have field day in this country, the consequences will be detrimental to our path to growth and development.
